The marine industry in La Paz will take another big step in modernization this fall as Navales Servicos La Paz S.A. de CV brings into service their 200 ton Travel Lift. The new facilities will open the door to local boatyard services to the growing number of large power and sail yachts that have discovered the boundless adventures of the Sea of Cortez.

Planning for the expansion of services at the yard formerly know to many as Taller Navales Bercovich began more than two years ago with planning, engineering, permits, contracting for marine construction and acquisition of the lift itself.

The first step in the expansion project was to seek permits. Since the waterfront is strictly regulated by more than one Mexican government agency plans for the development needed to be all encompassing. A pier had to be constructed out almost 150' into the Ensenada of La Paz near the Pemex facility which meant approval by the port authority was also required. 

Since two hundred ton travel lifts aren't available at any local convenience store, Abel Bercovich launched the search for the equipment to meet the needs of the marine community with its growing sophistication. After passing over a few machines the right travel lift for the job was discovered in the United States and trucked to La Paz in pieces, large pieces.

Construction of the pier project was begun in the summer of 2017 by a marine construction company familiar with the challenges of in-the-water construction. Concrete beams that would form the structure were poured on shore while the yard's mechanical crews worked nearby to reassemble the travel lift.

Today, more than a year's work of work later the project is nearing completion. The inner pier was completed in August and the outer pier is currently curing and final site clean-up is scheduled to begin mid November.

The first haul-outs with the new 200 ton travel lift will soft launch in late November or early December with smaller vessels. Since safety and security are always a top priority at the yard, new weight certified lifting bands have been ordered and should arrive after the holidays that will allow secure lifting of larger vessel over 100 tons. The new travel lift and piers will accommodate vessels to 35' wide up to 140' long and up to 200 tons.
