Amid all the bad news generated from the COVID-19 pandemic the Governor of Baja California Sur, Carlos Mendoza Davis announced the release of the 2019 crime statistics. Baja California Sur had the lowest number of homicides in the nation with just 15. The state ranked second in per capita homicides with just 1.86 per 100,000 citizens.
This is a dramatic turnaround for the state that just 3 years ago had the highest homicide rate per capita of any non-warring entity at over 110 per 100,000 during the peak of our Drug War which raged from August 2014 to the first week of 2018 when the state suffered more than 700 murders, nearly all cartel-related.
This is excellent news for those of us that call Baja California Sur home.
Unfortunately our northern neighbor didn't fare so well and Baja California had the fifth-highest number of statewide homicides and ranked #3 in Homicides per Capita in Mexico.
